Standing in the Doorway, Part 9
Hollow World: As the Champions emerge from the Cave Without End, they are attacked by a mysterious clawed creature that overpowers their attempts at stopping him. After wounding several of the party members, the creature tasted the blood of the Champions and declared “Incomplete,” before tearing a hole in the fabric of the world and slipping through. Atton and Malhavoc, followed by Jesnia and Tungsten, jumped through the tear after the creatures just before it closed. The survivors of the attack, left behind to question the nature of their assailant and wander at the fate of their friends, prepared to wait.
Mysterious Void: Malhavoc, Tungsten, Atton and Jesnia found themselves floating in a black void. A voice greeted them shortly after they began speaking to themselves. The four managed to get some information out of the voice, primarily that the creature’s declaration of “Incomplete” related to them. At the same time, they received a visual map of the surrounding area, and the path to take in order to reach the lair of the dragon keeping the Window of the World. Shortly thereafter, they were expulsed into the Astral Plane, where after a short while Malhavoc opened a gate back to the Hollow World.
Hollow World. Together again, the Champions decide to head to the lair of the Fire King. As they are about to reach the dragon’s volcanic lair, they approached by the dragon, and some parlay begins. Malhavoc, aided by Atton and Drakath, manages to talk the dragon into negotiating for the last bit of the mundia portalis. The dragon’s price, however, proves too steep for the party: He wished his release from the prison where Isoldier placed him, that he could return to the Surface World and wreck his havoc. The Champions decide to decline the dragon’s offer, and bravely entered his lair to tell him these news. There, they run into the Fire King’s minions, over a dozen worshippers of various races. After a very brief battle, the Champions stand victorious over the Fire King’s more mortal allies, ready to give the dragon the bad news personally.

You have to feel a little sorry for the minions OOC. After the double damage from the cone of frost, then the prismatic spray, Tungsten’s fear, Drak’s chain lightning, and Malhavoc’s Dictum. Everyone was left either insane, encased in stone, cowering in fear, poisoned, deafened, slowed, paralyzed, or yeah, dead.
Great fight though, done and over in a round. The casters had some really great rolls paired with solid tactics. That could have been a really messy fight that wasn’t bad at all. Lets hope the meatshields can do as great a job next session.

One things for certain… I doubt it will be over in a round next session. Methinks the ouchies are gonna start flying as well as the administering of smackies.

I’m just looking forward to pulling an all-nighter divying up the loot! This place has got to be crawling with it.

I am usually against an all-nighter in any and all form. However, I’ll enjoy every second of the fight. Maybe I’ll get some scales– can’t some pretty decent armor be forged out of the scales of such a mature dragon?
And is it me, or did we kill all his half-blood children? I am curious if they are all just followers, or in some way related.

To Krog:
You’ll be slightly disappointed. The reason the minions were such an easy fight is because they were slightly underequipped for their level.
Which isn’t to say that the dragon doesn’t have a huge horde which caused me to ask you all to tally how much weight you can carry. Just to say it’s probably less than you think.
As to Aramil’s question(s):
1) Weren’t you one of the people who were against the desecration of the dragon’s corpse? (Not to say you’re prohibited, just saying that it’d be rather hypocritical if you were) Regardless, you can get enough scales off a colossal dragon for I think two suits of full plate.
2) As to your second point; you didn’t bother asking (no reason to) but, yes, they were all his children. As to whether or not you killed them all, you certainly killed all of those that were in that room. (And technically you haven’t killed a half dozen of them or so, as you still have to deal with how you’re crossing the small river of flowing lava to get to them.)Comment by The DM — November 1, 2006 @ 4:46 pm

Aramil was more distraught that everyone agreed what needed to be done, but decided to dicuss the finer points of how it would end. In his mind he would much rather see the task done, and KNOW it’s done, than assuming everything will be fine. Aramil used the head of the dragon he slayed to vault over the wall of Bao’Garan, which seems similar to what Malhavoc is getting at. Aramil would side will Malhavoc on this one more then Constantine, but he still doesn’t enjoy seeing the group split before such a large and important undertaking.

I was looking through the DMG last night, but I couldn’t find the benefit that dragon scales offer other than that they can be used in the construction of armor (aside the benefits for druids.) Am I missing a table, or is this info just not fleshed out?

The mechanical benefits to having dragon scale armor:
1) Not metal, so druids can wear them.
2) Considered masterwork. There might be some slight other mechanical differences aside (IE, weight, hardness, hit points of armor) but these are the two major ones.
The real benefits to having dragon scale armor:
1) It looks cool.That’s. That’s about it, really.

Dont particular dragon scale armours protect against certain type of damage, or was that purely AD&D?

That was actually only Baldur’s Gate, I believe.

Dragon armor was PHENOMENAL in AD&D. It granted AC to the wearer that was like 4-6 points (I forget) worse than the dragon’s AC, and some kind of resistance or immunity to the energy type. It was better than full plate in a walk. Nowadays, it’s pretty pointless mechanically, but fun conceptually. Unless you’re a druid, and even then it’s debatable.

Remember, also, you can shape the armor however you want. Simply because it’s dragon scale armor doesn’t mean it has to be scale mail. It can be full plate, chain mail, leather, or even a shield.

If we learned anything last campaign it was that it’s always good to have a spare lying around. I can’t see much use of having it around for Aramil as it doesn’t give him bonus enough to match mithril, or DR like adamantium. It could definately be a polished suit of armor for events though– not everyone in the world walks around with a suit of full plate made by the scales of one of if not the most powerful red dragons in Mystara.

Oh, crossing the river of lava? Easy, that’s what I have stoneshape memorized for. We’re crossing in Kagyar-praisin’-style.

Course this is all assuming us nature lovers allow you to cut the hide up in the first place, or that we actually kill the dragon.

I don’t think I’ll actually bother with cutting up the dragon for it’s scales in the first place. It would offer no real bonus, and take *A LOT* of time on something the size of that dragon.

Sorry about skipping out a little early last night, something came up that I needed to attend to. Thankfully it was after the fight and as things started to cool down.

Also, never ever leaving Brun again. Bad things happen in my absence.
