The Soundtrack of Sir Aramil Korrelin

The first thing I think of the drive home Monday night is planning the next hour so that I can be in #Mystara in time to start D&D, that is to say if we managed to start at seven every Monday night. The second thought that comes to mind is the music that I’m going to queue up for the night to get myself in the mood to play Aramil.

Music might not be pivotal for some of you. I know for a fact that Sam and I have completely different taste in music. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that to get in the mood to play Krogoth that Sam listens to no music at all. But for some of us, I suspect that music plays a pivotal role in “how much” we get into character any given night.

I had this idea for a post quite awhile ago but waited to post for the reason that I was a little confused how the music I listen to for Aramil has evolved in the years I have been playing him. I noted to Alex this afternoon, the old Aramil used to focus on soundtracks—Lord of the Rings, King Arthur, Braveheart, you name it. It set the feel of the world.

I remember sitting in front of my computer in the dark of my room during my time at University listening to “The Bridge of Kazadum” dozens of times over with the bass cranked up because it set the mood I thought Alex might have been trying to set. Well, that was a silly thought—I get the same “mood” out of different music these days. After its all said and done, the way Brun “feels” to me probably “feels” different to each one of you.

In some ways the “new” but older Aramil plays to “younger” music. With the notable exception of “Furious Angels” by Rob Dougan, I listened to almost nothing alternative or rock-like with the younger Aramil similar to what I listen to now.

To those of you who can afford 99 cents a song to fulfill your curiosity, I decided I would post a brief yet organized list of the music I listen to for older Aramil. Some of you might already have this music, in which case you can get a great feeling for the sort of music that gives me inspiration to play Aramil the way he comes across. However, I suspect most of you who investigate my music, and compare it to the character, won’t know what the hell I’ve been thinking.

Track 1: Sway – Lostprophets

-Note: This is the most common song I play with Aramil. While not all the lyrics fit, the feel and beat of the song seem to be perfect when playing Aramil. However, the lyrics in this song fit better than most.

Track 2: We still kill the old way – Lostprophets

-Note: Can you see a pattern? Lostprophets is some of my favorite sound when playing Aramil. It has a good modern beat that I often enjoy, along with lyrics that despite meaning to its true content, can be taken to work for D&D.

Track 3: Right Behind You – Our Lady Peace

-Note: This song is most notable for slower times between periods of action. If anything this song is important for me if not for some just the repeating lines:

I don’t know, but I believe in yesterday
And what it means
To bleed and know that you’re okay.

Track 4: Hands Down – Dashboard Confessional

-Note: Well known by High School students everywhere, even the mighty fall to Dashboard Confessional. In terms of a “love song” when having contemplated Aramil’s recent love interest in Erela Ravyn, I was listening to this song. The lyrics don’t fit at all, but the feeling of young love in Aramil’s heart seems to fit perfectly.

Track 5: A Praise Chorus – Jimmy Eat World

-Note: This is the best “get up off your ass and get going” song out there. Before any great adventure this must be listened to at least once or twice. The lyrics fit for someone fed up with waiting and analyzing, and who just wants to seize the day. It shares a good fast beat with decent lyrics.

Track 6: Everlong – Foo Fighters

-Note: A return to the love song. Everlong happens to be my favorite song in existence, so it comes to no surprise that it finds its way onto this list with Aramil’s songs. Words cannot describe the beauty of this song—the guitar, the lyrics, the sound, the beat. If you haven’t heard this, and you are thinking of downloading anything, download this one.

Track 7: New Way Home – Foo Fighters

-Note: When waylaid away from home, and trying to accomplish something on some sort of time period, this song fits perfectly. If you haven’t gathered by reading this far, you really can’t go wrong with Foo Fighters and Lostprophets in terms of Aramil-compatible music.

Track 8: Furious Angels – Rob Dougan

-Note: The song affectionately entitled “The angry paladin music” by my former roommate, Furious Angels is a classic for when Aramil gets so pissed he can’t have lyrics to his music. It’s the idea that everything else disappears and that the only goal ahead of him is swift action and death. The fact that this song has no lyrics means that it is pure and simple concentration on the goal at hand. My roommate would always look over and smile, “uh oh, the angry paladin music, what’s going on?”

Track 9: 11:11 PM (CST) – The All American Rejects

-Note: No idea why this song fits, except for the fact that I seem to be in love with the refrain:

It’s a chance to fix mistakes,
One more for the last time,
Don’t you throw our dreams away,
Don’t waste this chance with your smile
10 seconds left on this dial,
This could be the last time.

Track 10: Eye Conqueror – Third Eye Blind

-Note: While not a huge fan of Third Eye Blind, I just happen to love the first verse:

I am the conqueror
I taste your scent in the wind
Set my sail but then you sink my boat
So I begin to swim
Bash my foes until I win
Lances smash across my chest
That's my quest you wonder why
I will never die.
A few bonus tracks to come, including a rewind to look at the sort of music that first sparked Aramil.

  1. Who knew you were so… emo
Next you’ll be dyeing a stripe of hair blonde and turning vegan.

I am one to talk of course. Most people are aware that I listen to music pretty much 24/7 I’ve never really been into soundtracks, though the Gladiator and yes Buffy ones are pretty damn fine.

For DnD i usually do heavy rock. Iron Maidens Somewhere in Time album has always been my DnD album, right from when I started playing. Its the soundtrack to my medieval fantasy.

However for the last year or so and certainly these last few sessions since we started I tend to be following what Flex does… Rather than pick out individual songs however I tend to do albums. Flex would probably enjoy this selection based on his choices.

    lostprophets – Liberation Transmission
My Chemical Romance – Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge
My Chemical Romance – The Black Parade
    and for sheer comedic value…
recently ive been listening to Weird Al’s Straight Outta Lynwood

  2. I tend to listen to both lostprophet albums when I play. I think there are three at least, but I listen to both Liberation Transmition and Start Something.

My Chemical Romance is great as well– I don\’t have any of their music yet, but I\’m probably going to pick some of their stuff up soon. I like blue october a lot too.

I\’ve been struggling with my emo music tastes too, but I just love the stuff. Like an old woman who loves to listen to Elvis, got no reason why I can\’t stop listening to it.

  3. What sold me on MCR was the tagline for Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.
“The story of a man, a woman, and the corpses of 1000 evil men.”
Once you get the fact that each album is telling a story and are therefore concept records. Songs like “I never told you what I do for a living” suddenly become laugh out loud funny in a black comedic sense. (He kills evil men to regain the soul of his lost love from the devil).

The only reason I started listening to this style of rock was that I got told I was emo so I checked it out, and actually liked a lot of the stuff, so i guess in some ways I am. However i’ve just always been a rock fan, and am not worried about labels in that sense.

lostprophets are a great little band, and well they are Welsh. Theres definitely a touch of the Manic Street Preachers about them… especially the manics early stuff.

  4. You have interested me even more in My Chemical Romance– maybe I should check them out soon. Sounds like a neat concept.

Yeah, I guess I can hear a hint of Manic in their music. I’m a big fan of Manic alone. I only have one or two of their CD’s, but I like what they have. I listen to them occassionally when playing.

As for lostprophets– within the past 4 months they have easily risen to one of my favorite bands.

  5. Yeah, that’s one of the things I miss with the online campaigns is the shared experience of battle music. On occasion, I fire some up, but usually not. I tend to favor video game soundtracks myself – lyrics distract me from tone. My playlist goes by event rather than character (otherwise I’d need to download some techno for Thursdays with Siren), but this works for me. Very cool idea for a post.

  6. I’ve actually been looking for a way to “solve” the “Shared experience of battle music” problem. I thought of a few options – Shoutcasting, Skypecalling, couple of other things – but none really seemed appropriate. I still haven’t 100% given up on the idea, but for the most part, I think as an exercise in voluntary soundtrack immersion it’s just too complex.

Though I agree, great idea for a post. I’ll be putting up what I have as my own Mystara theme soundtrack… eventually.

  7. I listen to a a variety of different types of rock and metal. My playlist on normal days consists of a healthy dose of Tool, Godsmack, Disturbed and others. I augment this stuff with some Nickleback and I just got into a band called Hinder.

Now, back before my HD crashed, I had a mp3 list from a CD called Songs inspired by Middle Earth (yeah I know). And this was mainly what I listened to during the last campaign, along with some other, different music, by Enya, Enigma and Sarah McLauchlin.

  8. I have some songs I’ll play here and there. Some bits and pieces from Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars. Sometimes if I am a little bored I’ll put the Arrogant Worms on. I remember I used to have a soundpack for WCRPG that was a lot of fun until people started catching on to the fact that I’d time the explosion of a capital ship with the climax of the WC2torpedo mp3.

  9. I picked up My Chemical Romance’s new CD this morning labeled “Black Parade.” It’s got a good sound to it, definately something to listen to during a session.

    Comment by Aramil — November 2, 2006 @ 12:17 pm

  10. Black Parade is a very good album. Again it’s a concept album. Bit more grown up album than their first 2. Only one punk song really on it.
It’s all about a young war veteran learning he has inoperable cancer and 2 weeks to live, and all the thoughts and emotions he goes through before dying. Pretty heavy stuff.
